Terminology Management

What is terminology

Definitions of terminology abound but for our purposes we will use one of the simpler ones: "a system of words used to name things in a particular discipline" (http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn). The key thing to note here is that terminology treats terms as belonging to a domain-specific special language.

But what constitutes a term? Terms can be anything, from a single word to a multi-word compound to a whole phrase or even an acronym or abbreviation. They can be related to products, services, technologies, procedures, applications, materials or can comprise of industry jargon. Anything that accurately and uniquely describes a given concept within a specific subject field can qualify as a term. It's also important to note that what qualifies as a term in one field, may have a different meaning or meanings in other fields, or may even be meaningless taken out of its specific context.

Why is terminology important

Terminology plays a crucial role in all fields, but in the corporate environment, in particular, it lies at the heart of many organisational aspects: It enables and promotes communication and knowledge sharing between people working in the same scientific or business field, it helps to build and maintain a company's image, it ensures brand consistency, improves the quality of offerings and enhances customer trust and satisfaction.

Terminology Management

This is the key to a successful knowledge management and ensures that a clear and consistent language is used within and across all products and services of a company.

Effective terminology management:

  • Builds a standardized, corporate "language", which in turn leads to consistent branding and global image shaping
  • Reinforces customer trust and loyalty
  • Leads to improved quality of localized content
  • Enables recycling of content and terminology, leading to translation savings
  • Ensures consistency within and across products
  • Ensures consistency among multiple translators working in parallel
  • Leads to substantial time and cost reductions through a shorter localization cycle, the reduction of review and QA steps and the prevention of re-work
  • Enables a smoother communication among all team members, gives them a common "language" to express themselves
  • Enables sharing with third-parties that may ultimately lead to term standardization
